When I planted grass around the pool last summer, I obviously had to do a ton of watering in order to get it to grow, especially during a drought summer. Due to the hardness of Wisconsin well water, the sprinklers left more than their fair share of hard water deposits on the pool fence, which really stood out since the fence is black. This summer, I took the time to fully clean the fence. It’s fairly miserable work, since it involves scrubbing every piece of the fence with lime-away and then washing each of those pieces with water to prevent the lime-away from corroding the black coating on the aluminum.

After almost nine hours of scrubbing, the fence looks great, back to its original black color!

Hi Jon,
Thanks for sharing your Pool Fence Clean Up project—I really appreciate the candid write-up and before-and-after visuals!
I can totally relate to the frustration of dealing with hard-water mineral deposits, especially on dark surfaces. The description of scrubbing each section with Lime-Away and then thoroughly rinsing to protect the black aluminum coating really brought it to life. Nine hours of hands-on work sounds exhausting, yet the result is so satisfying—you’ve restored that fence to its original sleek appearance!
