As discussed in a previous post, I’ve been hard at work getting the yard into shape for the summer. In the recent weeks, I’ve shifted from the heavy labor of clearing downed trees, pruning branches, and putting down mulch to some of the easier late-spring activities, including planting flowers, shrubs, and grass. I have it down to a science now after many years of following the same plan, and everything turned out great this year after a few days of planting.

Most of the grass seeding I did was just to thicken existing areas that were a little thin, but I did some more significant planing in the yard where the ground had been compacted into ruts when all of the heavy equipment drove up and down the hill a few years ago during the construction of the pool. The grass never came back as well as I would have liked it to, and the ruts were obvious when looking at the lawn. To fix this, I brought in a bunch of soil this year to fill them in, and replanted grass from scratch:

The last task was to use the ATV to haul all of the pool furniture down from the shed. I always leave that for last, since it’s a way of christening the summer by truly opening the pool.

Now that the weather is in the upper 70’s consistently, I’ve fired up the pool heater and we’re ready for summer!
