Home Improvement Projects at a Country Home in Verona, WI
After the new flooring was installed in the main level of the Verona house, I learned some lessons about how far you should allow uninterrupted runs of click flooring to go without transitions, as well as the importance of meticulous subfloor prep before the flooring goes in. A couple of small mistakes led to some … Continue reading Flooring Repair
Most of my projects this spring and summer have been at the Verona house, but I’m still working on several things at the lake house. First, I’m painting all of the interior walls before putting in new flooring and making some other smaller design improvements. The walls were originally painted with a flat white paint … Continue reading Lake House Interior Paint and Design
Several weeks ago, the staircase project was completed. First, the upper staircase had to be demoed, and was in a similar state to the lower staircase in that the stairs needed to be raised up with plywood before inserting the new treads and risers. After that, the new stairs started to take shape. Finally, the … Continue reading Staircase Construction Complete
This past week, construction began on the new oak staircases at the Verona house. I’m replacing the old carpet stairs with new oak stairs, stained to match the hardwood floors. It’s a long, tedious process to cut the stair treads and risers exactly right, but it slowly began to take shape. First, the previous stairs … Continue reading Staircase Construction
As furniture was replaced during all of the interior design projects at the main house in Verona over the past year, I had been moving it to a storage unit. Some of it has been donated, but some of it I had earmarked to replace even older furniture at the lake house or the guest … Continue reading Storage Unit Furniture Swap
Now that all of the new flooring is done, the last phase of that project is to replace the carpeted stairs with wood stairs that match the flooring. I’m going to work with a professional carpenter on the project, since it is going to be a very complicated process to make and install custom stair … Continue reading New Stair Project
A couple of weeks ago, I finished repainting the laundry room and mud room, along with replacing the art on the walls and the window treatment. It was a relatively small change, but it made a huge difference in making that part of the house look less dated. It removed the last of the cheesy … Continue reading Laundry Room Redesign Complete
The next project I’m going to tackle before spring truly arrives and I can get to work on a multitude of landscaping projects is a redesign of the laundry room. It’s one of the last rooms in the house that still has a tacky country feel to it, but because it’s a laundry room it’s … Continue reading Laundry Room Redesign
When I originally remodeled the smaller walk-in closet in the master suite in the house to be a powder room for my wife, I redid all of the furniture but didn’t touch the lighting. It still had old fluorescent closet lighting along with a cheap floor lamp, and it had been a low priority to-do … Continue reading Powder Room Lighting
Now that the lower level has been complete for awhile, my interior designer (Brittany from Interiors By B) wanted to bring a professional photographer to take pictures of the project. Obviously the pro did a much better job than my amateur iPhone photos, and was able to capture the brightness of the house. Here are … Continue reading Interiors By B Photography
