Home Improvement Projects at a Country Home in Verona, WI
The most recent in a long line of room redesign and remodels at the Verona house was, at long last, the master bedroom. Here is how the room looked before: Following a similar pattern to the other rooms in the house, the first step was painting the walls and installing new flooring and rugs. After … Continue reading Master Bedroom Redesign
Most of my projects this spring and summer have been at the Verona house, but I’m still working on several things at the lake house. First, I’m painting all of the interior walls before putting in new flooring and making some other smaller design improvements. The walls were originally painted with a flat white paint … Continue reading Lake House Interior Paint and Design
Several weeks ago, the staircase project was completed. First, the upper staircase had to be demoed, and was in a similar state to the lower staircase in that the stairs needed to be raised up with plywood before inserting the new treads and risers. After that, the new stairs started to take shape. Finally, the … Continue reading Staircase Construction Complete
This past week, construction began on the new oak staircases at the Verona house. I’m replacing the old carpet stairs with new oak stairs, stained to match the hardwood floors. It’s a long, tedious process to cut the stair treads and risers exactly right, but it slowly began to take shape. First, the previous stairs … Continue reading Staircase Construction
After the electrical failure that the well experienced several weeks ago, a new underground line had to be installed to power the well. I took the opportunity to also have a new underground line from the guest house to the shed and to the gate dug, so that intermittent GFI tripping due to a ground … Continue reading Electrical Excavation
When I was doing various spring cleanup tasks around the land, I noticed that the roof of the woodshed I built on the back corner of the land had collapsed over the winter. It’s not a complex structure, just essentially a cube made from treated lumber that holds logs in place. The roof is important … Continue reading Woodshed Roof Replacement
After spending much of last summer working on landscaping improvements at the lake house, this summer I’ll be focused on landscaping at the main house. It’s still not warm enough to do much planting yet, so much of my work has involved ripping out certain plants that will be replaced. A lot of planters close … Continue reading Spring Landscape Beginnings
One small project I’d had on my to-do list for a long time had been replacing the front door of the house. The original door had been there since before I bought the house, and was pretty simple. In addition to this door, I also took the opportunity to replace the front door of the … Continue reading New Doors
The next project I’m going to tackle before spring truly arrives and I can get to work on a multitude of landscaping projects is a redesign of the laundry room. It’s one of the last rooms in the house that still has a tacky country feel to it, but because it’s a laundry room it’s … Continue reading Laundry Room Redesign
When I originally remodeled the smaller walk-in closet in the master suite in the house to be a powder room for my wife, I redid all of the furniture but didn’t touch the lighting. It still had old fluorescent closet lighting along with a cheap floor lamp, and it had been a low priority to-do … Continue reading Powder Room Lighting
